Parks

What Durrës lacks in family-friendly, facility-packed civic parks, it makes up for in the wide-open spaces of Kallmi, Toke Park and the beautiful Rrushkull Natural Park on the north coast.

Valë (Wave) Park in Lagje 18

In the residential area, just north of the Niko Dovana Stadium. This is a park for local kids to play sport, and has facilities for tennis, football, and basketball. Take the Unaze bus to the Stadium and walk north, or the Porto Romano bus to the hospital and walk north and east

Eco Park in Sector Rinia

Inspired by the locally discovered Roman mosaic, “The Beauty of Durres,” This park is built on a reclaimed industrial landfill site and largely constructed from waste. There's a climbing wall, walking paths, plus educational pavilions and cultural events. Reviewers report that although pretty, it lacks resources for hiring sports equipment and is frequently closed.

The park doesn't seem very accessible by public transport, but if you take the Rinia bus, you alight at the end of Rruga Kuvendi Franceskan. It's a long walk, though.

Olympic Park by the University

Further out towards the coast, but slightly more accessible by public transport, this is a more obviously football-oriented park where local teams and schools train and play.

Toke Park/Pisha above Currila.

Not so much a park, just a free, green space starting in the hilly area to the north-west of White Hill in Currila. The entire hilly area from here up to Porto Romano is open, with many tracks where you can wander and explore.

Rrushkull Natural Park

Up on the north coast, past even Sector Rinia, is this beautiful natural park at the estuary of the Erzen River. It has a diverse ecosystem and is a particularly interesting location for birdwatching and fishing.

Insight takeaways:

Durrës doesn't have many of the kinds of parks beloved of bigger cities, but it's proximity to open spaces on the periphery, the open green spaces around Kallmi and the hilly area to the city's west, and the magical nature reserves on its northern coast make for a lifetime's worth of wandering and exploring.
