Festa e Ullirit (Olive Festival)

The Festa e Ullirit (Olive Festival) is a long-standing autumn tradition in Durrës. It is organised by the cultural association “Durrësi Autokton” together with the municipality of Durrës, and its central ritual is the planting of olive saplings. The olive was chosen because it symbolises peace and harmony among the city’s residents, and each October the association plants a new olive tree in one of the city’s public gardens. The plantings also promote the olive and help make the city greener.

The festival is also an occasion for honouring people who have contributed to the city’s life: at a ceremony where chosen figures receive the title “Honour of the City of Durrës” (Nderi i Qytetit të Durrësit). The ceremony is accompanied by a festive concert featuring local singers and dancers. t.
